Sunday sketch #80

Recently I revisited some half-finished sketches for new ideas. I found a design for a circle of arrows that ends up looking a bit like a wreath – I’d never quite finished it, but knew how I wanted it to look. A bit more sketching, and I was happy with the block design. Tiling the block produces a simple pattern with some circular motion.

Removing the sashing between the blocks produces a slightly tighter design, with some more interesting secondary shapes.

These 9 x 9 blocks could be made using half-square triangles, squares and rectangles.

I thought I was done with ribbon shapes for awhile, but they seem to have cropped up again. This design is a bit like Sunday sketch #74 – lines emanating from the corners of a square to focus on the centre – but with alternating colours.

I started this sketch after thinking about half-square triangles, but sometimes I wonder if it would be easier to translate designs like this one into quilt patterns by creating long strips of alternating colours (dark red and light red, or light red and white), then sub-cutting them at a 45° angle to get strips of those elongated diamond shapes.

After creating Sunday sketch #77, I used the same block in different orientations to create this week’s design.

I’d love to try making this in two really vivid colours, like hot pink and orange, or red and purple. I think the best method to use would be foundation paper piecing (using very large bits of paper!). I haven’t done much paper piecing, but I’m so tempted to try this one!
