Sunday sketch #512
I almost didn’t share this week’s sketch, because I’m still not sure if I like it. It’s got one of my least favourite features!

I think I’ve mentioned before that I just don’t like the pointy edge of a drunkard’s path curve (or any curve, really). See the tippy-tips of the curve shapes in this design, where they taper off into sharp points? Ugghhh. And where the end tips sit alongside a similar shape in the background colour (pointing in the other direction)? Ugggghhh. Yuck yuck YUCK.
(This really makes me want to survey aaallll the quilters to see what shape gives them the ick.)
I tried to redesign this one to avoid them, but in the end I just decided to let it go!
Anyway…!
This is a block-based design; the layouts shown here are 5 × 5. Originally I just had the curvy twist in each block, but then I added two orange peels in diagonal corners, parallel with the one that’s in the middle (as the inner shadow of the twisty bit); those peels then create the circles between the blocks.
Even with just those peels and circle shapes, there are a few options for colouring.

I also tried omitting the circles/orange peels and colouring in the stars inside instead. I tried using the same colour as the curvy tips that they touch, or all in the darker colour. And even extended the stars outside the design a little.

I think I prefer the original with the circles rather than the stars.
(It’s funny how the whole design feels like it’s tilted down towards the right… I think if I flipped the blocks, it’d see-saw to the left.)
This week’s sketch would be pretty easy to make into a quilt. It’s mostly quarter-circles (drunkard’s path units), with a few orange peel units too. The size of the quilt would depend on how small (or big?) you can make those curves, and how many blocks you want to make. And whether pointy curve ends give you the ick! 🙂

Love this design. Wouldn’t necessarily choose to make drunkards path, but still see these as strong designs 😀
