Sunday sketch #522

This week’s sketch is based on a shape that emerged accidentally / unintentionally in another design. I didn’t end up pursuing or posting that other design, but I filed this shape away for future reference!

It’s just a single shape, tiled and rotated. The pointy bit in each shape nestles into the curved spaces left behind by two other shapes.

I actually started with the whole design on point…

…but decided that I preferred the standard layout. Here’s a version in which the tiling fills the entire space.

But I decided to pare the design back a bit so I could feature some of those pointy bits around the outside.

Those pointy bits remind me a little of Sunday sketch #386 and also one of the versions of Sunday sketch #215 (made into a quilt by Dominique). They’re a fun feature.

I’ve chosen colours here that lend a transparency effect to the design; the sketch can feel a little flat without that effect. Or, at least, I feel like the colour palette and placement are important elements of the overall design.

Making this design into a quilt would be easy; it’s just quarter circles (drunkard’s path units) and squares. The layout is a standard grid, and the size of the shapes and overall quilt would be limited only by how small you wanted to go with the curves. Around 3.5″ (finished) is my lower limit for comfortable curves, but you might find that you could go smaller.
