Sunday sketch #520
I’m borrowing from last week’s design to use those chunky outlines again.

I’ve been playing around with traditional designs lately, tweaking things here and there. Here, I’ve dissected a sawtooth star and added thick(er) borders within and between the blocks. I restricted myself to using only horizontal and vertical lines – no diagonals.

I like how there are three levels of squares: in the very middle of the block, outside each block quadrant, and then outside the whole design. (There are no square outlines around the entire sawtooth star blocks themselves, but they’re kinda implied.) There is something about that repetition of elements that really works for me.
I’ve described the borders as ‘thick’ and ‘chunky’ here, but really I’ve designed them as being no more than about an inch wide (finished) in an actual quilt design. The dark colour helps to add heft. Speaking of colour, I think there’d be plenty of ways to use the palette to elevate this design further, but I quite like these simple colour combinations.
