Sunday sketch #517

I could’ve sworn I’d used these curvy flower shapes before, but I can’t put my finger on the design(s). The space within the flower block can accommodate pretty much anything that fits into a square, so a plus seemed as good an idea as any!

I’ve paired curves with crosses/pluses before – see for example Surplus and Sunday sketches #495 and #496. The two shapes often work well together.

The crosses between the flower blocks echo those within the flowers themselves, but in reverse. And because of the curvy corners of the flowers, those interstitial crosses seem to be contained within squircles. I nudged the crosses’ ends in just a smidge, so they don’t line up with the corners of the flowers. I just liked that more. The shapes need a bit of space to breathe.

The design started as more sawtooth-like shapes, where the corners of each flower had perpendicular edges; the crosses between the flowers (in white, below left, and dark blue, below right) then seem to be held within squares rather than squircles.

But that design felt a bit too like Sunday sketch #495, so I took it one step further.

I also started with a 5 × 5 layout of both designs, but then pared them back at the last minute. Sometimes I think it’s easier to see what’s happening in a design when there are fewer blocks.

I’m not sure which version I prefer – straight or curvy corners, interstitial squares or squircles?

You could make either (or both!) into a quilt using quarter-circles (drunkard’s paths), rectangles and squares. That’s it! Lots of potential for colour play and mixing and matching fun fabrics.
