I designed this week’s sketch before last week’s, but they both use that double/nested curve that I’ve been thinking about more lately. The basic block in this week’s sketch is different – basically just a double drunkard’s path unit – and the overall design is much more regular/repeated and symmetrical. Ahh, my happy place(s) 🙂

I’ve always equated drunkard’s path units with quarter-circles, but I don’t think they’re necessarily the same thing… I think drunkard’s paths can have that ‘lip’ at the edge so the curve doesn’t meet the corner of the unit (whereas the curve of a quarter-circle does). I can’t find any definitive source to confirm that understanding though. But anyway, that’s just a long way of saying: quarter-circles wouldn’t work in this design. It has to be (double) drunkard’s path with a bit of an edge.

My first version used a lot of pinks and purples, which felt more… dare I say… intestinal. Which was kinda my point. So it’s still my favourite colourway, but I’ve tried a few versions in other non-biological colours too.

I purposefully offset the bigger shapes so the blunt edges of each shape’s drunkard’s paths nest into the centre of the paths in the adjacent shape. The resulting lumpy stretch of background-colour curves between the bigger shapes is what reminded me of intestines.

Each colour appears in two of the bigger shapes, either in the outside (perforated bits) or the inside (circular perforations). And each of the bigger shapes includes some background colour to keep things lighter.

I came very close to making this one, but have been sidetracked by some other projects this year. I might still tackle this one though. There’s something about it that really tickles me!
