Sunday sketch #140
If you’ve followed my Sunday sketches (here or on Instagram) for awhile, you’ll know that I often reuse the same shape in different orientations or arrangements. This week’s sketch uses the same shape as Sunday sketches #138 and #139 – a sort of origami chevron.

Because of its angles and lines, the shape nests in really interesting ways. With this design, I started at one end of the page and meandered towards the opposite edge with no real plan in mind.
The rows of shapes alternate in direction – pointing up or down – which could be highlighted using different colours or fabric combinations.
This week’s design would be slightly easier to make than last week’s, as it can be broken down into separate rows – particularly if the shapes are made using flying geese and quarter-square blocks.
Sunday sketch #139
I’ve been playing around with the same shape from Sunday sketch #138 – that origami-like chevron – in a few different designs. I like how it nests together in interesting ways.

I couldn’t figure out how to recreate this design in Electric Quilt 8 (at least, not easily), so you’ll just have to use your imagination with the hand-drawn sketch instead.
Because the chevron units are offset in this design, it might be easier to translate into a quilt pattern using a slightly different construction technique. Instead of quarter-square triangles and flying geese, it would make more sense to build the units using squares and half-square triangles, and arrange them on point. You’d also need some strips and rectangles to fill out each larger block. It’s awkward, but doable.
Sunday sketch #138
I’ve been playing with a new shape this week, sketching it over and over again in new orientations. The repetition is meditative!

Like last week’s sketch, I redrew this sketch in Electric Quilt 8, just to play with the colours. For lack of any better ideas, I stuck with two of my favourite colours.

This block – does it have a name, that heart-ish, arrow-ish block? – is so versatile, and it would be easy to make. A quarter-square triangle on top of a flying geese unit, or a square and some half-square triangles… there are a few different ways to approach this block, all of them fairly easy.
Next week, I’ll share some related designs using this block.
