Sunday sketch #515

Onions!

This started out as an experiment with drunkard’s paths, and ended up as a bag of onions. (What’s the collective noun for onions?)

I liked the shape that emerges as different parts of two onions overlap. Sometimes it’s an orange peel, or maybe two gothic arches back to back. Sometimes it’s a star. And other times it’s a wonky kind of double-headed curvy, pointy thing.

If I was going to use ‘real’ transparency – that is, colours that make more sense – I’d probably try something like this version… where the dark teal and lemon yellow make a dirty green, and the light ochre and dark teal make a rusty brown.

But to be honest, I prefer the ‘unreal’ version, with a single colour for all the overlaps. It might not make sense from a colour perspective, but I think it’s a bit more eye-catching and fun!

I’m drawn to the idea of using a single colour for all overlaps in the onion shape experiment, it creates a unique visual effect. I’ve had similar experiences with geometric patterns, where unexpected colour choices can lead to fascinating results. Geometriquilt’s approach to playing with colours and shapes is really inspiring, and I’m looking forward to discovering more of their posts.
