Sunday sketch #405

I hardly ever do themed Sunday sketches, but once I came up with this egg-shaped design, posting it today seemed too good to pass up. Happy Easter!

This design uses the long oval drunkard’s path shape from Jenny Haynes (Pepper, Sax, Sten), who’s created a series of templates that I have and love. I’ve used this shape in lots of designs, and in a quilt too. Combined with quarter-circles (or drunkard’s paths), it creates the perfect egg shape.

I didn’t mess about with rotating or doing anything special with this week’s design – I just tried it in a bunch of different palettes. This is the most Easter-y colour combination I could manage…

…and then I got a little experimental.

I really love those colours together!

This next palette feels a little Klimt-y somehow… that golden yellow and all those bitty pieces of colour.

Oooh I like these a lot.

I tried not to colour in all the parts of each egg, but instead used the background / negative space as one of the components. I also framed some of the eggs too, just to provide a bit of structure and balance. Of course I always imagine my designs in solids, but I think this one could work well with a limited selection of prints.

These designs would be really easy to make into a quilt. The long oval drunkard’s path units are so easy to make with Jenny’s templates, and you could also use her standard drunkard’s path templates, because her templates are all sized to fit with each other, so everything will match up. So basically I think I have no excuse not to make this one 🙂
