This week’s sketch is a happy accident; I was in the midst of playing with the design for Fizz and spotted the potential for a different shape by rotating and colouring some of the blocks a different way.

Actually, there are two block types in this design, and they’re set on point. (If you zoom in, you can see the faint outlines of the blocks and shapes; something changed in Electric Quilt 8 or my PDF writer within the last year or so, and now I can’t get rid of them. Anyway….)

I tried to play around with the layout to make it look a little less regular and a bit more organic, but I can still see a bit of a pattern in there. I’d probably try harder if I was going to make this one.

Each almost-circle is made from four quarter-circles from adjacent blocks. And the skinny stretchy bit between two almost-circles is the background piece when you have two double drunkard’s path curves on diagonal corners of a square block (the same as those used in Fizz). I can tell as I’m writing this that that’s not clear at all….! So I’ll just show you the block outlines:

I’d use Jenny Haynes‘ double drunkard’s path templates to make both blocks. And I’d probably just start with a full square of the background fabric, and then cut away the shapes I wanted to insert in a different colour, one by one. That avoids overstretching that skinny middle bit in the block on the left. And is probably less wasteful overall.

This is such a cool shape – mid-century modern, maybe? It feels retro, anyway. (Although nowadays, ‘retro’ probably covers anything up to about 2000…!) Anyway, I’m very tempted to make this one, or at least something very like it.
