Sunday sketch #416
One of the simpler versions of last week’s sketch really appealed to me, but I wanted to try it with a diagonal (on-point) layout. That’s not possible in Excel (I don’t think!), so I moved across to Electric Quilt to develop the idea further.

This is such a simple design, but it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out how to recreate it in EQ8. In the end, the solution was super-simple: a block-based design using an on-point layout, with no need for sashing. The only difference between the two halves of the design is the rotation of the blocks.
I couldn’t decide if I prefer the line between the two colours/halves to be vertical or horizontal, so I tried both!

In most cases, I put the darker colour on the top, so I tried to dig out examples of both orientations here. (I tried a lot of two-colour combinations in EQ8….)
I also tried a slight variation, where the zig-zag between the two halves of the design has steps of two blocks instead of one. This adds a bit of visual interest, I think.

I didn’t pay enough attention to the layouts of those versions; the zig-zag doesn’t bisect the design evenly. I could crop the images, but I’m too lazy haha. If I was going to make one of these into a quilt, I’d probably tweak the design a little to ensure it was symmetrical. But that’s just me 🙂

I still can’t decide which orientation I prefer!
I normally use solids in my quilt designing and making, but I do have a stash of prints – stuff I bought before I realised I prefer sewing with solids, and stuff I just bought because I love the designs. I have a soft spot for kitschy florals, so I decided I’m finally going to use one of the prints I’ve had for years. It’s dark blue with small flowers, and I’ve got about 2 metres. I’ve paired it with a bright solid that picks out one of the colours in the print, and I’m going to see if they’ll work together in this design. I think it could be a really fun pairing. I’ll share pics of my progress on my Instagram feed!

My first reaction, was how the heck did she do that in EQ. Then I read that it took you a long time, so I won’t feel so bad. I don’t know if I will try it, but I do like a challenge. Funny how somethings are harder than they look, and some things are easier than they look. keep up the interesting work. I love it.
I can’t wait to see this in fabric. Love your inspiration every week! You are so imaginative and talented!
