Sunday sketch #413
More curves this week, but interspersed with some stars, which I haven’t used in awhile!

I always like that mix of warm colours against a dark blue background, but this is a great layout for a two-colour palette too.

I tried the same layout with a sawtooth star instead of an eight-pointed star, but I don’t like it nearly as much. There’s just something about those sharp points in an eight-pointed star!

Even with a palette of only two colours, there are a few ways that the design can be changed using colour placement.

For example, I ’emptied’ the centre squares of the eight-pointed stars, so they match the background colour of the block.

There are lots of other ways where this design can be changed up. In this next version, I deleted some of the blocks, coloured adjacent blocks to create a wavy secondary shape, and then added and subtracted stars.

The wavy shapes can be overlapped or criss-crossed, with stars punched out.

I tried to avoid any palettes/versions that felt too ‘patriotic’ or nationalistic, but I guess it’s hard to avoid that with a design that combines stars with wavy lines.
Anyway, this week’s sketch uses a standard layout of two alternating blocks: one with an eight-pointed star, and the other featuring four quarter-circle curves (or drunkard’s path units) that meet in the middle. So, all basic units that should be easy for even a beginner to sew!
