Sunday sketch #430
This week’s sketch is a direct descendant of last week’s, using curves instead of angles.
It’s also another basic block-based design in two colours. And I’ve done my usual layout where I’ve removed shapes at either end of the design to reveal different-coloured backgrounds.

This design reminds me a bit of Sunday sketch #365 and also sketches #400 and #401. I guess it’s all those vertically bisected circles.

There are a few different ways to add/remove elements to change up the design.

Or just to fill the whole space with tiled blocks.

The blocks are tiled in a standard layout but rotated with alternating blocks coloured in a reverse colourway. Remember the block from last week? I replaced the flying geese with a half-circle, and the snowball corner with a quarter-circle.

I’ve used this approach before to iterate designs: flipping between curves and straight lines is a fun way to explore new shapes and potential connections between adjacent blocks. It doesn’t always work, but sometimes it does! For example, I did it with Sunday sketches #356 (curves) and #357 (straight lines), and partly with #341 (curves) and #342 (straight lines).
This week’s sketch could be made into a quilt using half-circles and quarter-circles (or drunkard’s path units). You could probably find ways to eliminate a few seams by combining adjacent quarter-circles into half-circles. The whole thing could be pieced into columns, since the bulk of the design involves vertical seams.

Hi Carolyn,
That first one gives me frothy waves vibes with a great intersection between sea and sky. With the fourth one I thought “Ooh vines with the odd flower showing through.” Mixed greens maybe. I love seeing your ideas flow.
Cheers Vivien
