Sunday sketch #408

This week’s sketch uses the same basic block as last week’s, but with a few minor tweaks (of course). I’ve thinned out the border curve, paired blocks up back-to-back to create these lozenge shapes (a bit like ring pulls), paired up the lozenges, and then rotated those pairs.

I’m using a three-colour palette here, with one of the colours acting as the background and the other two forming the lozenges and/or filling in one of their two circles. Changing the colour placement alters the balance of colours a bit – the background colour is most prevalent here.

I also tried single lozenges arranged vertically (tilt your head if you want to see them horizontally!).

Those designs might look a little better with some thin sashing between the lozenges, but I didn’t bother trying that in Electric Quilt 8. I don’t think this is a design I’ll ever make, but it’s fun to play around with.

I talked a bit in last week’s post about where you might’ve seen similar shapes. Funnily enough, I was leafing through Irene Roderick’s book Improv Quilting at the Australasian Quilt Convention last weekend and saw a similar shape again: Irene made a quilt in 2016 called ‘Primarily Minions‘. I don’t know how Irene’s block is constructed; her outer curve is thicker than I’ve shown here (but closer to last week’s block),and obviously she’s used the shape in a completely different way. But it’s always fun to see what other people do / have done with similar shapes!
