Sunday sketch #447

Well, I mentioned that the pointed arch was now in my design rotation, so it didn’t take long for it to appear in another Sunday sketch.

I played around with this shape a lot last year: see Sunday sketches #433, #434, #435, #436 and #437, for a start. And I thought I was done for a while, but it turns out I wasn’t 🙂

Or a slightly bigger palette. The only problem with a three-colour palette and a 3 × 3 layout is that if you want to avoid adjacent blocks of the same colour, then three blocks will have to appear in the same colour on the diagonal; it’s unavoidable.

I think a two-colour version is more powerful, somehow. I also see hints of larger circles more clearly in these versions. The first version below has a black background; the smaller two versions underneath have a red background, with the order of blocks switched.

I originally kept the centres of the blocks coloured differently than the adjacent pointed arches to create a square shape that echoes the other square shapes within and between the blocks. But the design works without them, too – a smidge simpler.

These designs could be made into quilts using lots of pointed arch units and a few squares and quarter-circles. Daisy Aschehoug (@warmfolk) gave me a set of pointed arch templates, and I’m determined to use them this year!
