Sunday sketch #444
This week’s design makes me think of conversations – the large curvy shapes are like (double-sided) speech bubbles, and the connected circles are like ellipses signalling little pauses in speech.

I actually started with a square layout, but it felt very busy.

I decided to open up the top and bottom to give the eye a place to rest. I chose pink as the background colour in this next version, but I could have just as easily chosen yellow or red.

This design is a lot like last week’s in that each large shape is surrounded by six others – thus requiring a palette of at least three colours. And one of the colours is the background, so some of the larger shapes seem to have disappeared, leaving their innards to float in space.

And like last week’s design, this week’s works in a palette of three shades of the same colour.

This design is block-based, with the blocks rotated and coloured differently to create the larger shapes. Each of the larger shapes here is made up primarily of two blocks, with the pointy bits coming from adjacent blocks. Each block uses a larger half-circle (or two quarter-circles) for the outside edge and then smaller half-circles (or six quarter-circles) to create one and a half small circles. Obviously the large background areas could be made from larger squares or rectangles too.
I’m really drawn to big graphic designs with a limited palette, so I’m happy to be wrapping up 2024’s Sunday sketches with this one. Whether you have been reading my blog for a while or just found me here, thank you for following along! I’m looking forward to many more designs in 2025.
